DescriptionIn 1824, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed a law requiring every township to appoint three persons as "schoolmen" to superintend the education of poor children in the township. Each township maintained an annual list of these children. This record source consists of the lists of poor children from 1824 to 1830, and also includes the names of the "schoolmen" appointed in 1824.
