This presentation will cover the common research ‘brick wall’ challenging many African American descendants of formerly enslaved ancestors, and ways to overcome it. Conversely, we will cover why African American family researchers sometimes are surprised to learn that their story isn’t the standard “Roots” story.”

The first major part is describing the typical narrative…captured in Africa, brought to a southeastern state through the Transatlantic Slave Trade to a plantation, and free by1865, and how to research prior to the 1870 census (if that is the narrative). The second major part talks about a couple of other scenarios (manumitted before emancipation, and living “free”; and prior bondage in the Caribbean before transportation). I will also mention a scenario from my wife’s family…sold in Connecticut, and living free in Vermont in the early 19th century.
