The Metes and Bounds of Land Plats

  Popular BCGS presenter Jerry Smith will show us how land plats can solve difficult genealogical problems. The session includes an introduction to drawing metes & bounds plats, discusses the value of connected tract maps that show multiple parcels, and covers available plat and map resources on-line at the Pennsylvania archives. Jerry will present several case studies that illustrate the value of using land plats in your research.

Jerry Smith
  Gerald (Jerry) Smith, CG, researches in Pennsylvania families. He is the IGHR and SLIG course coordinator for the week-long land platting course and is on the IGHR, SLIG, and GRIP faculty for maps and land records. He also teaches various topics for the military series of courses at those institutes. He has published a number of books and articles, including abstracts of Bedford County, Pennsylvania, Court of Quarter Sessions records. While he resided many years in Pennsylvania, he recently moved to Illinois to make sure his granddaughter grows up appreciating her family history.
