| Text of obituary: | Karl Oettel of Levittown died Thursday, March 8, 2018. He was 98. Born in Scranton PA. He was the son of Karl Ernest Oettel and Mary Catherine Cunningham. He graduated from Sell-Perk High School in Perkasie. During his high school years he was a star athlete on both the track team and the baseball team. He pitched a no hitter in his Senior High School championship game in 1938 against Hatboro-Horsham High School. Mr Oettel enlisted in the National Guard on 1941 and served in the 111th Infantry division during WW2 in the South Pacific. He made 4 beach landings at Eniwetok, Kwajalein, Engebi and Peleliu. He married Joyce Kramer in 1942 and is survived by two daughters: Mary Pettigrew(George) of Bettendorf Iowa, and Joann Cosgrove(Rick) of Levittown. He is also survived by his brother Robert of Sellersville, 5 Grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren, 2 Step Grandchildren, 10 Step Great Grandchildren, six nephews and 1 niece. He was predeceased by his wife Joyce and sisters Mary Russell and Anne Mann and 1 nephew. He was an original Levittown homeowner and founding member of both St Michael’s parish and St Joseph the Worker where he and his wife Joyce sang in the choir and Mary his daughter was the first organist. He was a founding member and Home Secretary of the Knights of Columbus, chapter 4215 and designed the logo and named the first Newsletter the Vessel. He worked as a Draftsman for Cutler Brothers and Simpson Sign Company. He designed and drew the original Neshaminy Mall totem pole and the Gino’s Rocket Ship. He also worked on the PSFS sign that lights up the Philadelphia skyline. He was a kind and generous Father who loved sweets and had his own Tastykake drawer which was always filled with treats. He will be greatly missed by his loving family. In lieu of flowers, donations to your favorite charity would be appreciated. |
